About product

Eduard 1:48 Bristol Blenheim Mk.I — photo-etched landing flaps

A photo-etched detail set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory that replaces the plastic landing flaps with fine etched metal. For technological reasons plastic flaps are always thicker than the scale calls for, and their internal ribbing is only suggested. Etched metal is thin to tenths of a millimeter and makes it possible to build the flaps in the lowered position with the internal structure visible — and on an aircraft parked on the ground that is the most conspicuous detail of the wing. The set is intended for a model of the Blenheim Mk.I in 1:48 scale. Check that it matches your kit beforehand against the information on the packaging of the set.

The real subject

The Bristol Blenheim Mk.I is a British all-metal twin-engine bomber of the second half of the 1930s. When it was introduced its speed put it among the best of its category, but the rapid development of fighters quickly erased its lead. Its characteristic features are the radial engines in nacelles on the wing and the glazed front of the fuselage.

Building and painting tips

Expect that the plastic flaps will have to be cut out of the wing and the recess cleaned up — the operation is irreversible, so first try dry how the etched part sits in the opening. Cut the parts off with photo-etch scissors or cut them out with a scalpel, and make the bends in a bending tool. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue or with epoxy. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface and will peel off during handling. It pays to paint the inside of the flaps and bring it out with a dark wash before you fit the assembly to the wing.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of models of wartime aircraft in 1:48 scale.
  • Modelers who want to build the aircraft with the flaps lowered.
  • More experienced builders willing to cut into plastic parts.
  • Those interested in a scale-faithful thickness of the control surfaces.

This is an accessory for a model. The model itself, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory for a model; the kit itself is not included in the package.

As a rule yes. The plastic flaps are cut out of the wing so that the etched part can be fitted. The operation is irreversible, so proceed carefully.

Degrease the metal and spray it with a primer. Without a base coat the paint peels off smooth etched metal during handling.

The number of parts is given on the packaging of the set.
