1:48 Dark Wood

The pattern

The sheet carries dark wood grain, that is rich brown tones with pronounced graining. Such a surface corresponds to wood that was given a dark coat of paint or varnish, or to hardwoods used where a part had to take a load. Against the light sheets of the same line, dark wood comes across with more contrast and is noticeably visible on a model even from a distance.

Field of use

It is most often reached for on a wooden propeller, which on older machines was glued up from several layers of differently dark timbers and whose grain is very much on show on the finished model. It also suits the floors and the side panels of cockpits, wooden parts of the fuselage and accessories such as crates, pallets or furniture for dioramas. The grain is printed for 1:48 scale, so the density of the graining matches parts in that scale and transfers onto a larger model only with difficulty.

Application procedure

The elements are applied the wet way. Spray the area beforehand and go over it with gloss varnish; on a matte surface a silvery haze forms under the film. Cut off a piece slightly larger than you need, dip it in lukewarm water for a few seconds and let it rest aside until the film slides freely on the backing. Then slide it onto the part, align the direction of the graining along the part and blot the excess water with a cloth from the center to the edges. A decal softener draws the film into the engraved lines and the transitions, and once dry it is advisable to go over the whole area with varnish.
