A photo-etched set of landing flaps for the Dornier Do 217N-1 night fighter in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Dornier Do 217N-1 came about by converting a heavy bomber into a night fighter. The glazed nose gave way to a solid front packed with gun barrels, the antenna-like aerials of the Lichtenstein radar grew on the wing and a battery of obliquely firing cannon appeared in the fuselage. The machine was heavy and slower than single-engined fighters, but it could patrol over Germany for long hours and bring heavy firepower to the target.
Molded plastic flaps tend to be thick because of the injection process and to have a smooth, untruthful surface. Thin metal sheet solves that problem: the pressings, the lightening holes and the profile of the leading edge come down to a thickness plastic will never give. An exposed wing interior then shows on a model more strikingly than the whole of the rest of the surface work.
Working with the set assumes cutting the original plastic flaps off and cleaning up the wing. It is therefore a job for a modeler who already has a knife and a file under control. The reward is the open mechanism of the wing, which cannot be missed when the model is viewed from above.
A twin-engined machine has a wing large enough for the work to pay off. The flaps take up a substantial part of the trailing edge and once lowered they transform the silhouette of the aircraft at first glance, an effect that cannot be achieved by any other single step.
