This product is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory for one: a sheet of pre-cut masks from MH models for spraying the markings of the Dornier Do 215B-5 in 1:48 scale. The make-up of the insignia on the sheet is stated on the box. The masks are cut for the ICM kit.
The B-5 version differed fundamentally from the reconnaissance B-4: the glazed nose gave way to a solid nose with onboard armament and the machine was used as a night fighter. A dark night scheme is rewarding for masking, because light insignia on a dark base are exactly the case where a decal gives away its glossy film on a matte surface.
A mask works as an accurate template: it is stuck onto a finished coat of varnish, sprayed over with the color of the insignia and removed. The result is part of the layer of paint, so it behaves in the same way: it goes matte in the same way, it rubs in the same way and it takes a wash in the same way. On night schemes that is a difference you can see even in a photograph of the model.
First finish the camouflage and let it cure for several days. Apply gloss varnish to the place of the insignia, the mask on top of it, and close the edges again with the base color. Spray light insignia on a dark base over a thin coat of white, as otherwise you will be covering with unnecessarily many layers and the edge will thicken. Remove the mask while the paint is fresh.
The masks are cut for a particular kit in 1:48 scale, so please check the match with your model in advance. Paints and varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
