The air intakes are among the most conspicuous places on a Phantom model and at the same time among those that kit makers most often deal with only as a duct sprayed white. On the real aircraft, however, the area around the intakes is full of technical lettering and warning markings, and that is exactly what this sheet adds. It is published by Furball Aero-Design, an American specialist in decals for naval and tactical aviation. This version of the sheet is prepared for machines in the gull gray and white scheme, that is with upper surfaces in a light gray shade and the underside in white.
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was a twin-engine two-seat fighter and attack aircraft, one of the most widespread Western-built combat types of the second half of the twentieth century. It served with the US Navy, the US Marine Corps and the US Air Force and in many other countries. The gull gray and white scheme was carried above all by US Navy machines in the period before the move to tactical gray camouflage.
Decals are applied to a smooth gloss surface, or silvery microbubbles will form under the film. So go over the area with gloss clear first and let it cure thoroughly. Cut the decal out as close to the artwork as possible; surplus clear film is the biggest source of visible edges. Soak it in warm water for only a few seconds and let it slide onto a dampened spot. On the divided surface of the intakes a decal softener will help, drawing the decal into the shape. Finally go over everything with matte or satin clear.
This is a decal sheet, an accessory for a kit you already own. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
