This is a photo-etched add-on set aimed at the landing gear of the F/A-18C model in 1:48 scale, not a model of the aircraft. On carrier-borne aircraft the landing gear and its bays are among the most complex areas, and injection-molded plastic can only manage them in simplified form. The specific list of parts is stated on the box of the set.
Photo-etched landing gear sets usually take care of the thin elements that come out too chunky in plastic: the doors and their inner reinforcements, small brackets, runs and plates in the bays. On a model built with the gear down, this very area is clearly visible both from below and from the side, so the work pays off. Carrier-borne aircraft moreover have conspicuously massive landing gear, which raises the attention paid to detail even further.
The F/A-18C Hornet is the single-seat version of a twin-engine carrier-borne multirole aircraft. The landing gear is designed for catapult launches and for landings with an arrestor hook, that is for loads incomparable with land-based aircraft; the nose leg carries the guide fitting for the catapult.
Finish and paint the bays before you close them up with the wing or the fuselage. Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, and make the bends in a bender so that the edge is sharp and straight. They are glued with superglue in the smallest possible quantity. Before painting, degrease the sheet and apply a primer; in the bays it pays to use a light base, on which a wash that brings out the detail then tells better.
