About product

Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB Desert Tiffy airbrush masks in 1:48 scale

This set from MH models serves to have the markings sprayed rather than applied. The template is stuck onto a finished coat of varnish, paint is applied through the cut-out and once it is removed the insignia is left with a sharp edge and without any film at all. That is exactly why modelers reach for masks on machines that are meant to look weatherbeaten, with rubbed paint and a layer of dust. The set is cut for a particular Typhoon kit in 1:48 scale, so check the match with the model you are building. The extent of the sheet and the number of individual templates are stated on the box. The target kits are Hasegawa and Eduard.

The real subject

The Hawker Typhoon was a British single-engine fighter with a powerful liquid-cooled engine, strong onboard armament in the Mk.IB version and a wide landing gear. In its role it excelled in speed at low altitude and in the weight of external stores it could carry, so it became above all a strike machine for attacks on ground targets. The nickname Tiffy was given to it by the pilots themselves. The designation Desert Tiffy in the name of the set is tied to a particular color scheme.

Spraying tips

Let the varnish cure properly before applying a mask and degrease the surface. Press the template down above all around the perimeter of the cut-out, otherwise paint runs underneath. Spray perpendicularly and in thin coats, ideally in two or three passes. Take the mask off shortly after spraying, while the paint is still flexible, and do so slowly at an acute angle. If you plan a different shade layer under the insignia, allow for that and apply it before you lay the template down.

Suitable for

  • builders who want markings without the rim and gloss of a decal
  • builds with pronounced wear and a layer of dust
  • modelers working with an airbrush and used to thin coats
  • adding to a Typhoon Mk.IB kit in 1:48 scale

This is a modeling accessory, not an aircraft kit. The paints and the model are not included in the package.

FAQ

Tiffy is a common pilot nickname for the Typhoon, and the combination Desert Tiffy refers to a desert color scheme.

You will not. The package contains masking templates only, and the kit itself has to be bought separately.

You do not, and that is one of the advantages of masks. A template holds even on a matte finish, whereas a decal needs a smooth glossy base.

The templates are made for single use. Once removed they lose their grip and a second spraying may no longer have a sharp edge.
