1:48 Heinkel He-111Z-1 EXPERT kabuki masks

EXPERT kabuki masks for the Heinkel He 111Z-1, 1:48 scale

A masking set from the Czech manufacturer New Ware for the model of this twin-fuselage glider tug. The parts are die-cut from kabuki tape, a thin paper material with a mild adhesive that conforms well to the curves of glazing and leaves no residue when lifted. The manufacturer offers the sets in this range at two levels, BASIC and EXPERT; this item carries the EXPERT designation. What exactly each level covers is given in the manufacturer's overview. It is not a kit and these are not decals.

Why this type is demanding to mask

The He 111Z-1 came about by joining two He 111 fuselages with a new center wing section carrying a fifth engine, and it was used to tow heavy cargo gliders. For a modeler that means doubled glazing: two glazed noses with intricate framing, two cockpits and further transparencies. In 1:48 scale every frame is large enough for inaccuracy to show, and at the same time there are so many of them that cutting tape by hand takes longer than the build itself.

Work procedure

• Lift the masks from the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a knife, not with your fingers.
• Wash and degrease the glazing first; a greasy surface is the commonest cause of paint running underneath.
• On curved areas work the mask down with a wooden stick from the center to the edges.
• Spray the interior shade on the inner surfaces before the exterior color goes on.
• After lifting the masks, check the edges and carefully true up any burrs with a damp brush and a little thinner.

Who the set is for

• Builders of large multi-engine aircraft in 1:48 scale.
• Modelers who want the glazing done in detail.
• Those who prefer an accurately die-cut mask to a hand-made cut.

This is an accessory for a plastic model, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
