Masks in 1:48 scale for the glazing of the single-seat version of the Ilyushin Il-2 ground-attack aircraft. The masks cover the glass from outside and from inside and the sheet contains two sets of national insignia masks.
Responsibility details are not available.
The ground-attack aircraft nicknamed the flying tank had an unusual core to its structure: the armored bath around the engine, the radiators, the fuel tank and the pilot was not added protection but a load-bearing part of the airframe. The original single-seat form had no gunner behind the pilot, and it was exactly that which turned out to be an expensive mistake in the first year of operations. German fighters attacked from behind and above, where the armor ended, and losses were enormous. From the end of 1942 a two-seat version with a glazed gunner's station was therefore built, so early single-seat examples are the characteristic form of the first war period.
Unused film needs three things: a flat surface, shade and room temperature. A bent sheet remembers its shape and a piece then seats with only one half. Sunlight cures the adhesive, while heat above a radiator melts it instead and the individual outlines shift on the backing. The safest place is a closed kit box, the sheet flat between cardboard and with nothing heavy on top. A bag with a separated sheet is worth labeling, because the film by itself reveals nothing about the scale or the type of aircraft.
Two sets of insignia give room for a mistake, because the red stars are sprayed in several coats and one spoiled mask need not mean the end of all the work on the lower and the upper surface of the wing.
