A set of cut masks for building the Ilyushin Il-2 ground-attack aircraft in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor an airplane model but an accessory for a plastic kit: the masks are stuck onto the areas that are meant to stay free of paint and are taken off once it has been sprayed. The templates are cut to the shape of particular parts, so the tedious measuring out and trimming of tape directly on the model does not arise.
The Il-2 was a Soviet single-engine ground-attack aircraft of the Second World War period. The defining feature of the design was an armored shell around the engine, the pilot and the fuel tanks, which formed the load-bearing part of the fuselage. It was built in a single-seat version as well as a two-seat one with a gunner. From a modeler's point of view the key feature is the heavily framed cockpit canopy with mostly flat panels and a separate armored windshield, plus the wheels with their hub covers.
The straight frames of the Il-2 are rewarding in that a mask settles exactly into the engraved frame line, but they also show up every inaccuracy without mercy: a crooked edge on a straight line is visible at first glance. Settle the mask down dry, therefore, press it with a blunt stick or a toothpick all the way round and work the corners down especially carefully, as that is where the film likes to lift. Against paint bleeding it helps to spray the edge first with a thin coat of base or clear paint: that seals the edge and any seepage stays colorless. Then lay the shade itself on from an airbrush in several thin coats, never in one heavy one. Take the mask off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch, not after several days, when the edge peels away along with the varnish.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Check the extent of the set against the manufacturer's details before you buy.
