Eduard 1:48 Lockheed TF-104G Starfighter, a masking set

A set of precisely cut self-adhesive masks from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the Lockheed TF-104G Starfighter in 1:48 scale. The masks are cut from kabuki tape, that is from fine Japanese masking tape, which holds well even on slightly curved surfaces, forms no capillary under the edge for paint to run into, and leaves no adhesive on the clear parts once lifted. It is not a kit or a finished model but an accessory that shortens the most tiresome part of a build.

The real subject

The TF-104G was the two-seat training version of the Lockheed F-104G Starfighter fighter aircraft. It kept the slender fuselage, the turbojet engine and the very thin trapezoidal wing of small span that was characteristic of the whole type. The second seat called for a lengthened cockpit and a different shape of canopy, so the masking of the glazing differs from the single-seat version. The machines served with a number of European users as a transition and continuation training type.

Use and tips

The long two-seat canopy has several separate frames, so the set is divided into more pieces. Transfer them with tweezers and press them down with a soft toothpick, so that the edge meets everywhere. Spray the frames in the interior shade first. Starfighters are often built in a polished metal finish, on which every imperfect edge of a mask shows at once, so apply the finish in thin coats and lift the mask as soon as possible. If you are using a metallic paint, apply it at the very end, as it is hard to overspray and to mask.
