The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a slender single-engine aircraft with a very short trapezoidal wing and a high-set T-tail. The TF-104G version is the two-seat trainer variant derived from the single-seat F-104G, with the crew seated in tandem. Because of the second cockpit it carries less fuel and the internal layout of the forward fuselage differs. The type was operated by a number of European users, where it served mainly for crew conversion.
With its slender fuselage and thin wing, the Starfighter is a type on which every needlessly thick plastic part stands out. Photo-etched parts are a few tenths of a millimeter thick and can therefore capture elements that an injection mold cannot manage at all: fine grilles, thin covers, loops. The working procedure is different from plastic: the parts are cut off the fret with a scalpel on a hard surface, folded in a bending tool or between razor blades, and bonded with cyanoacrylate glue. Before painting the metal has to be degreased and primed, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. It pays to work over a light-colored surface or a cloth, because a part that pings off is practically impossible to find on a carpet.
