A 1:48 decal sheet for the early production blocks of the American twin-engine medium bomber. Six machines, four of them with nose lettering.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Martin twin-engine medium bomber entered service with the reputation of a machine that forgives no mistakes: it had a small wing area, high landing speeds and demanded precision from its crews. The early blocks from Baltimore production are the most interesting of all, because they still carried the original short wing and older equipment.
Six schemes on one sheet give room to build a machine with a personal name as well as an anonymous example in factory finish. Anyone building an airfield diorama will appreciate that the markings come from one production wave, so they belong together logically in a scene.
The nose lettering is small and finely drawn, so it pays to transfer it onto a well polished glossy surface and to hold it with soft-jawed tweezers. On the rounded nose it helps to soak the water from under the decal with the corner of a paper towel and only then press the film into shape.
The early blocks carried dark olive upper surfaces and gray undersides, and operating from dusty airfields quickly dried the paint out to a matte look. A glossy intermediate coat therefore belongs under a decal, otherwise the edge of the film gives itself away on a roughened surface. The model, paints and varnish are not included in the package.
