1:48 mask set for the deck tow tractor for the J-15 Flying Shark (New Ware)

Self-adhesive cut New Ware masks in 1:48 scale intended for the tow tractor of the Chinese naval aviation, that is for the accompanying vehicle built together with the model of the carrier-based fighter J-15 Flying Shark. It is neither a kit nor decals. The package holds a sheet with masks cut exactly to outline from thin masking tape; the modeler peels them off the backing, transfers them onto the part and covers the rest of the area with ordinary tape. It is one of the smallest items in the range, because it covers only the ground equipment and not the airplane itself.

Why a pre-cut mask and not a knife

The cockpit glazing of a small vehicle has frames a few tenths of a millimeter wide in 1:48 scale. Cutting them from tape directly on the part means running a blade over clear plastic, where every hesitant stroke stays as a visible score. A pre-cut mask leaves this step out: the shapes are the same on the left and the right side, the edge of the sprayed paint comes out crisp the first time and the clear parts stay undamaged.

How to apply the masks and spray

• Wash the clear parts with lukewarm water and detergent before masking and let them dry freely, as a mask will not hold on a greasy surface
• Take the masks off the sheet with the tip of a scalpel or with sharp tweezers, not with your fingers
• Once it is laid on, press the mask down all the way round with a wooden toothpick and give the corners the most attention
• Seal the edge first with a very thin coat of the shade that lies under the mask, and only then spray the target color
• Take the mask off shortly after the paint has set, pulling it at an angle back over itself and not straight up
