A set of masks for the cockpit glazing of the Me 163 Komet rocket fighter in 1:48 scale. Prepared for the Dragon and Revell moldings, with pieces for the outer and the inner frames.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Me 163 was the only rocket fighter to reach combat service during the Second World War. A tailless glider with a Walter engine, it took off from a jettisonable dolly, climbed steeply to the bomber formations and after a few minutes of engine running returned in gliding flight onto an extending landing skid. The propellants were so aggressive that they were a greater danger to the pilot himself than the fire of the defenders, and a number of machines came to grief on landing. Even so it remains one of the most interesting aircraft of its day and is a regular participant at modeling shows.
On such a small machine the glazing is unusually prominent and the frames are thin. When masking by hand, tape on a narrow frame easily strays, and as soon as it is carried over the edge it is immediately apparent on a finished model, because the cockpit makes up a considerable part of the silhouette. The punched pieces from this set have a width derived from the molding and hold even on the short curves around the windscreen.
Anyone choosing the colorful finishes of units will appreciate that the cockpit tends to be done before the spraying of the tail surfaces comes along. The skid and the jettisonable dolly are sprayed separately, so the cockpit can be long finished by then.
