Markings for three Messerschmitt Bf 110C heavy fighters of the beginning of the war, including a machine from Aalborg in Denmark.
Responsibility details are not available.
According to prewar doctrine the Messerschmitt Bf 110 was to be a long-range escort machine that would force its own way to the target. The C version of 1939 and 1940 found the type at a time when that idea still held. Over Poland and over Scandinavia it worked, over England it fell apart within a few weeks, and the machine then had to find itself other roles.
The sheet offers three particular aircraft:
The last of them is interesting for its date. April 1940 means the Danish and Norwegian operation, and Aalborg was the key airfield in it, through which the supply of the whole northern flank ran. The commander of the Gruppe, whose aircraft is on the sheet, later took part in building up the Luftwaffe night fighter force.
The C version can also be told from the later machines by the shape of its wingtips. Anyone who reaches for the subject of September 1939 should reckon with the fact that the aircraft of that time did not yet have the additions introduced after the experience of the fighting over the British Isles, and should lighten the model accordingly.
On the build: the codes on the outer fuselage areas are applied over a surface with difficult geometry, because the fuselage of the Bf 110 narrows where the markings go. Working in smaller pieces and stretching the film slightly with a softener will do more here than trying to settle a whole marking at once.
