About product

QMT 1:48 Mitsubishi A6M5 to A6M8 Zero masking set, wheel bays

The set contains self-adhesive masks cut to the shape of the wheel bay openings of a model in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit and it is not decals. You use the masks at the moment the inside of the bay is sprayed and you are about to spray the outer surface of the aircraft. According to the name the set is intended for the late versions of the A6M Zero type, specifically the A6M5, A6M6, A6M7 and A6M8.

The painting order decides

With wheel bays it pays to keep to a clear order. First comes the primer and the shade of the interior of the bay, then the bay is masked and only then is the whole outside sprayed. The reverse procedure, that is, the outside first and the bay touched in afterwards, almost always ends with paint overrun at the edge of the opening. The set makes such a procedure possible without tedious cutting, because the die-cut already follows the outline of the bay.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was a Japanese carrier-based fighter. The A6M5 version became the most numerously built late variant, the A6M7 was adapted to carry bomb armament and the A6M8, with a Mitsubishi Kinsei engine, stayed at the prototype stage. The individual late versions differ from one another above all in the engine, the exhausts and the armament, while the shape of the wheel bays stays common to them.

Usage tips

Degrease the surface of the model before the mask is applied and have it completely dry, because a mask does not hold on a greasy or damp coat. Lift the mask with flat-jawed tweezers and lay it from the center toward the edges, so that no air stays under it. Hold the airbrush perpendicular to the surface and spray several thin coats instead of one heavy one, because a heavy coat creates a pronounced step at the edge of the mask. Store the remainder of the sheet flat, away from dust and direct light.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the late versions of the A6M Zero type in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who paint a model in a clearly set order of layers
  • those who want a sharp transition between the interior and the outer skin
  • builders who prefer a finished die-cut to cutting tape by hand

This is an accessory to a kit. The model itself, the paints and the glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

According to the name the set is intended for the A6M5, A6M6, A6M7 and A6M8 versions, which have the same wheel bay arrangement. Check the actual extent of the sheet against the die-cut enclosed.

First the primer and the shade of the interior of the bay; once it is dry, apply the mask and only then spray the outer surface of the model.

The set is intended for the wheel bays. Canopy masks are sold as separate items.

Yes, provided the surface is clean, degreased and completely dry. On a fresh or greasy coat the mask does not hold and the paint creeps under.
