About product

QMT 1:48 Mitsubishi A7M1/2 Reppu masking set, wheel bays

This is a masking set, not a kit. The contents are self-adhesive masks cut to the shape of the wheel bay openings. Their task is to cover the finished paint of the interior of the bay at the moment the outer surface of the model is sprayed, so that the shades do not mix and the boundary between them stays clean. The set is intended for models of the Mitsubishi A7M Reppu type in 1:48 scale, in the A7M1 and A7M2 versions.

Why a mask and not touching up with a brush

On most aircraft the inside of the wheel bay is in a different shade from the outer skin, and the transition between the two colors is sharp on the real machine. Touching up with a brush after spraying creates an uneven, visibly overrun edge, and in 1:48 scale a fault like that is easy to see. Tape cut freehand, on the other hand, can hardly be led accurately around the curved openings of the bays. A die-cut mask follows the shape of the opening along its whole length and holds the edge the same even where your hand cannot help itself.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi A7M Reppu was a carrier-based fighter developed in Japan as the successor to the A6M type. The A7M1 version flew with a Nakajima Homare engine, and on the A7M2 version a more powerful Mitsubishi engine was used. The type stayed at the prototype stage and never reached series production. The Allied code name was Sam.

Usage tips

First spray the shade of the interior of the bay and let it dry thoroughly, and only then apply the mask. Press the edge of the mask down around the whole perimeter with a toothpick or a wooden stick, because it is exactly at an edge that is not pressed down that the paint creeps under. Spray thin coats and lead the nozzle from the edge of the mask into the area, not against the edge. Lift the mask off as soon as the paint has set; once it has fully cured the edge tears away easily, together with a piece of the coat. Check the shades of the bays in the instructions to your own kit.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building Japanese aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • those who want a clean transition between the interior of the bay and the outer skin
  • builders who work with an airbrush and spray the model in layers
  • modelers who do not want to cut masking tape into curves laboriously

This is an accessory to a kit. The model itself, the paints and the glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a masking set, that is, an accessory to a model. The A7M Reppu kit itself in 1:48 scale has to be bought separately.

They cover the wheel bays and their surroundings at the moment the outer surface of the model is sprayed. The interior of the bay thus stays in its own shade and the boundary between the colors is sharp.

Best shortly after spraying, when the paint has set. On fully cured paint the edge breaks and the mask can tear away a layer of the coat.

Follow the instructions to the particular kit you are building. The masking set prescribes no shade.
