Why a figure belongs with a model

An aircraft model without a crew has no scale. Only once a human figure stands beside the machine or sits in the cockpit can you tell how large the aircraft is and how high the cockpit is above the ground. With present-day machines that goes double: a pilot in flight gear is conspicuous and set off in color against the gray surfaces of the aircraft, so the scene comes alive at once.

The real subject

The figure corresponds to a pilot of the present-day Russian Air Force. Trainer machines usually have a two-seat cockpit, so the figure also works in a pair with another figure, whether in the cockpit or in a scene on the flight line beside the machine.

Building and painting tips

• test the fit dry first, as the depth of cockpits differs between kits
• cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down
• wash and degrease the figure before painting, so that the paint holds
• paint the figure separately and seat it in the model only once finished
• leave the face and the helmet until last; they decide the final impression of the whole figure
