Masking films for the 1:48 P-51B Mustang kit by Tamiya. They deal with the framing of the glazed spine and of the sliding part of the cover, and that from the face and the reverse.
Responsibility details are not available.
Before the teardrop came, the Mustang had a full raised rear fuselage spine behind the pilot and a cockpit cover made up of several flat panes in a frame. The British were not satisfied with that view and retrofitted their machines with a bulged molded section known after its maker as the Malcolm hood. The B version was also the very first Mustang with a British engine, whose two-stage supercharger moved the limit of usefulness from a few thousand meters to the altitudes where the bombers actually flew.
The armament consisted of four weapons in the wing, mounted at an angle because of the thin airfoil. That proved to be a weakness: under g loading in a turn the belts jammed and some attacks ended in silence. The remedy came only with the next version, and that already had a different cockpit. The Royal Air Force used this type under a name of its own and committed it mainly to reconnaissance and attacks on ground targets.
A framed cover means more than a dozen small facets, not one of which is rectangular. Cutting them by hand usually ends with the widths of the frames diverging, and the eye spots it on a finished model at once, because the frames run horizontally across the whole spine.
The dimensions are derived from the clear parts of the kit named. On this version the framing differs between manufacturers even in the number of panes, so transferring it to another casting cannot be recommended.
