A decal sheet in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer DK Decals. It is intended for models of the North American P-51D and P-51K fighters and carries the markings of machines of the Fourteenth Air Force of the US Army Air Forces and of the mixed American and Chinese CACW wing. The sheet contains no plastic parts, so you need a kit of your own to go with it. Which specific machines are shown on the sheet and how many there are is given on the packaging.
The P-51D was an all-metal single-seat fighter with the liquid-cooled Packard V-1650 engine, a licensed version of the British Merlin. It can be told from the earlier versions by the bubble canopy with a lowered fuselage spine and by the armament of six 12.7 mm machine guns in the wing. Version K was technically almost identical, differing in the propeller used, and was built in a different plant. The Fourteenth Air Force operated in the China theater; the CACW was a mixed wing in which American and Chinese crews served together, and its machines therefore carried a combination of American and Chinese markings.
Decals belong on perfectly smooth gloss clear; on a matte surface air gets trapped under the film and the decal silvers. Cut the sheet right up to the artwork so that as little clear border as possible is left. Leave the decal in lukewarm water only long enough for it to slide on its backing, because long soaking washes out the adhesive. Put a drop of water on the spot, slide the decal across and blot off the excess with a cloth from the center toward the edges. The combined American and Chinese insignia tend to be larger pieces of artwork, and with those it pays to use decal softener and let the decal settle without being touched. Once everything is completely dry, seal the whole model with a matte or semi-gloss clear coat.
Decals are an accessory for a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
