A decal sheet from the manufacturer Kits-World with a set of general markings for models of the North American P-51D Mustang fighter in 1:48 scale. Its content is not the schemes of particular aircraft but a stock of identification numbers and letters from which you assemble the markings of your machine yourself. This variant of the sheet is prepared for aircraft with a covering camouflage finish; a separate form for machines with a bare metal surface is in the range alongside it. The extent of the character set matches the illustration on the packaging.
The P-51D is the version of the Mustang with a bubble canopy and a lowered fuselage spine, powered by a Packard Merlin V12 engine. Besides the machines flying in bare metal, aircraft with a covering finish were also used, on which the identification markings were applied onto a darker matte area. The contrast of a marking against the surface is therefore handled differently from a glossy metal surface, and the sheet takes that into account.
Camouflage finishes tend to be matte and strongly colored, which brings two pitfalls. First, a matte surface only seems to absorb the decal film: in reality air stays under it, so a gloss intermediate coat is necessary here too. Second, a dark surface can show through a light print, especially with thin decal films. If that happens, let the first decal dry and stick an identical second marking over it; the coverage is doubled by that. Mark out the layout of the numbers and letters beforehand lightly in pencil or with masking tape, so that the line keeps its direction.
