A selection of seven drawings from the noses of Northrop P-61 Black Widow night fighters, printed for 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Northrop P-61 was the first American aircraft designed from the first sketch as a night fighter. A matte black finish, a radar in the tip and a three-man crew made it a tool for a realm in which the daylight fighter force could not work. The machine was unusually large for a fighter, it had a pair of tail booms and a weight approaching that of medium bombers. The crews added their own humor to that, and the nose of every machine turned into a canvas.
This item gathers seven separate drawings. Among them are Little Audrey, Moonhappy, Coopers Snooper, Night Take-Off and Nightie Mission, supplemented by a variation playing on the name of the type itself. The illustrations keep to the style known from the pages of magazines for soldiers of the 1940s, and against a dark background they stand out considerably more strongly than the same designs would on the polished metal of daylight bombers.
The set is conceived as an offering rather than as the complete markings of one particular aircraft, so the first step is deciding which crew you want to commemorate. The drawings are separated close to the outline so that an unnecessarily wide edge of carrier film does not shine on the dark finish. The surface under the design must be glossy, because matte black gives the edge away at once. Once applied, the design is gently pressed down with a damp cloth and left to dry without being moved any further. A final matte overcoat then wipes out the difference between the drawing and the finish completely.
