Stencils for spraying the vertical three-color stripe on the fin of British aircraft, 1:48 scale. The package contains two marking masks, that is a set for both sides of the fin of one model. The glazing is masked separately; the sheet is devoted exclusively to markings. The pre-cut film is transferred with tweezers and paint is applied straight over it.
Responsibility details are not available.
The vertical stripe on the tail surface accompanied the British roundel from 1940, when the Royal Air Force was looking for a way to tell its own machines quickly from hostile ones when seen from the side. Three colors arranged one after another were visible even when camouflage or shadow concealed the fuselage. Its width and the proportion of the individual fields changed several times during the war, from the broad prewar form to the narrow postwar one, so it is often by the fin that the period of a photograph can be determined better than by the camouflage scheme. On a model it is a small but very conspicuous element, because it lies in the place a viewer's eye falls on first.
A layer of paint has thickness and in scale you will notice it. When the stripe is sprayed all at once and heavily, a noticeable step stays at the boundary of the colors after unmasking, which under a matte varnish shows as a small shadow. The solution is dull and effective at the same time: spray several very thin coats with a pause between them until the area covers, and do not hurry the result. If a step arises all the same, it disappears after a light rub with a polishing pad of the finest grit and a subsequent coat of varnish.
