A figure of a Royal Flying Corps pilot of the First World War in 1:48 scale from the Aerobonus range: a resin accessory for models of Allied biplanes.
Responsibility details are not available.
This resin figure from the Aerobonus range of the Czech manufacturer Aires portrays a British Royal Flying Corps pilot. In 1:48 scale it is the ideal companion for models of Allied biplanes: stood beside the machine, it gives a scene both scale and a story at once.
The Royal Flying Corps was the air arm of the British Army from 1912 to 1918; in April 1918 it merged with the naval RNAS to form the independent RAF. Pilots of that time flew in open cockpits, so their typical equipment included leather coats and helmets, flying goggles, scarves and gloves, all rewarding subjects for painting a figure.
First deburr the casting, wash off the mold release agent and give it a primer. The leather parts of the flying gear come out well in layered shades of brown, and a fine wash will bring out the folds and seams. Oil paints have proved themselves for shading the face, and ordinary modeling acrylics will handle the rest. A matte clear coat at the end evens the surface out.
The figure is supplied unpainted, as a resin casting to be cleaned up and painted.
