A diorama accessory in the form of a safe, that is, a strongbox, in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Hauler. It is not a model, nor a part for one particular kit, but a separate element of interior furnishing by which a scene can be moved from scenery to a place that has a story of its own. Check the contents of the package once you have unwrapped it.
A safe belongs wherever money, documents or valuables are handled in a scene: the office of a business, a shop, a post office, the hall of a bank, the staff room of an occupied building. In dioramas with equipment it works well precisely as a contrast, because it is a civilian, heavy and immovable object in the middle of a scene that otherwise stands on military material. A strong motif arises as well when the safe stays standing in an otherwise demolished interior, where the surrounding furniture has long since gone. Given its size in 1:48 scale, it suits vignettes worked out in detail and cutaways of buildings where the interior is in view.
A classic safe has a smooth lacquered surface, so apply the paint thinly and evenly, best by spraying or with well thinned paint on a brush. The base tends to be dark, black or dark green, and over it fine lining of the frames and the edges in a lighter shade suits well. Pick the fittings, the dial of the lock and the handle out in brass or steel and polish them lightly with a graphite pencil. It is the weathering that will give credibility: a light dark wash into the seams, sharp edges worn through to the metal by drybrushing and small corrosion at the floor, where damp lingers. A safe should not look light in a scene, so glue it hard to the floor with super glue and work dust and rubble in around its foot.
