An Eduard photo-etched set for a Spitfire Mk.I model in 1:48 scale. Thin metal parts where plastic is too thick.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I was the first production version of the best known British fighter. It reached the squadrons from the end of the 1930s and bore the hardest part of the fighting in 1940. It was powered by the V12 Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the armament consisted of eight 7.7 mm machine guns in the wings, and the elliptical wing gave it an unmistakable shape. In 1:48 scale the span of the model works out at around twenty-three centimeters.
Photo-etched parts are made from thin metal sheet, so they have the real thickness of the original. Where a plastic molding necessarily comes out thicker than it should be, photo-etched brass can add fineness without making the part uselessly fragile. That is exactly why cockpits, landing gear bays, grilles and small fittings are completed with it.
Cut the parts off with a sharp blade on a hard surface and hold them with tweezers; snapped off, photo-etched brass bends and is hard to straighten. Make the bends along the scored line, ideally in a bender. Where a metal part is to replace a plastic detail, cut the plastic off first and true the surface. It is glued with cyanoacrylate applied in tiny drops. Before painting, wash and degrease the metal and lay on a primer, otherwise the shade will not hold on the smooth surface.
For modelers who are building a Spitfire in 1:48 scale and want to take the model beyond a straight-from-the-box build. A model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
