This item is not a model of an aircraft but a set of control surfaces, specifically ailerons, which will replace the parts from a plastic Spitfire Mk.V kit in 1:48 scale. The cast ailerons have a finer leading edge and profile than a split injection mold can deliver, and they can be fitted in a deflected position. Deflected control surfaces are exactly what gives a static model in a display case the impression of movement.
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V was a British single-engine fighter, the most numerously built variant of the early line. The early machines had fabric-covered ailerons, which flexed at high speeds and worsened the response in roll. The change to metal-covered ailerons was among the most keenly felt service modifications to the type and markedly improved maneuverability about the longitudinal axis. The difference is clearly visible on a model, because the fabric covering has pronounced ribbing, whereas the metal one is smooth.
Cut the original ailerons off the wing with a fine-toothed saw and level the mating surface by sanding on a flat board. Wash the resin parts free of mold release agent and attach them with cyanoacrylate glue, ideally of a gel consistency, which gives time to set the angle. Keep the deflection restrained and set the two ailerons against each other, as the real controls work. Fill the gap after fitting with thin filler and sand it down, so that the transition to the wing does not show. Apply primer before painting; it brings the resin together with the plastic.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
