Self-adhesive masks for the eighth and the ninth version of the Spitfire in 1:48 scale. The sheet covers the glazing from the outside and the inside and adds one set for the national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk VIII was the fully worked-out airframe for the two-stage Merlin 60 series: a strengthened structure, a retractable tailwheel and deployment mainly in the Mediterranean and in Burma. The Mk IX, by contrast, came about in haste, by converting the airframe of the fifth version to the same engine, and it was precisely the speed of that modification that made it the most numerous British fighter of the second half of the war. The shape of the glazing is so close on the two machines that a single sheet covers both.
The choice of version falls before the first coat. The canopy is first seated into the fuselage dry, so that it can be seen where the seating edge of the frame runs, and only afterwards are the cut pieces laid on. The inner masks belong on the model before the cockpit is painted, the outer ones only at the moment when the seams on the spine are filled and sanded. Anyone who reverses this order usually ends up with frames clogged with finish that can no longer be put right except by taking the cockpit apart.
They are two canopy masks, that is the outer and the inner side of the glazing, and one set of national insignia masks. The pieces are self-adhesive and cut to shape. The kit, glue and paints are not part of the delivery.
A round insignia sprayed through a mask lies directly in the finish, so no edge of carrier film stands out under a glossy top coat. The squadron code letters and small technical lettering are completed with decals, and that only after the paint has dried completely.
