A masking sheet for the Supermarine Spitfire in the Vb version for a model in 1:48 scale. It covers the glass from the outside, carries a single insignia set and a decal supplement.
Responsibility details are not available.
The most numerous form of this British fighter came about directly out of the need of the moment: a stronger Merlin engine was fitted into the airframe of the previous batch and the result was a machine that dozens of squadrons received. The letter b in the designation describes the make-up of the armament in the wing, that is a pair of cannons complemented by four machine guns. Machines leaving for the Mediterranean were given a bulky dust filter under the nose, which changed their profile, and some of the examples intended for combat over the sea had clipped wingtips. A single version thus offers several distinctly different silhouettes.
Nine out of ten failures in masking are decided before the sheet is even opened. On a surface you have touched with your fingers during the build, grease is left, and a mask will not adhere along the whole length of the edge on it. Before applying, therefore, wash the part in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent, rinse it and let it dry freely in the air, not with a cloth. The second enemy is dust: plastic takes on a charge while being sanded and attracts it, so run a soft wide brush over the surface right before laying the mask down. And thirdly it pays to let a freshly sprayed base rest overnight, because the edge prints into soft paint and a groove stays there after it is lifted off.
