The British national marking consists of concentric circles, that is a shape that is easy to do with a decal but just as easily gives itself away under matte paint. A sprayed marking has no film. The paint settles straight into the surface, follows the panel lines and the rivets underneath and after matting looks just like the surrounding camouflage. On a machine that spent its life in dust and sun that shows at first glance.
The Australians chose this mark for the defense of their northern coast and flew it against raids by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. The higher ceiling and the better behavior in a climb came in useful over the vast interior, where there was little time to intercept. Some of the machines also ended up with squadrons in the Mediterranean.
It is advisable to rid the glazing of fingerprints before the shapes go on. The mask is laid down in stages, beginning with the straight sections, and only then are the rounded edges pressed home so that the material does not ripple anywhere. The spraying takes only a thin coat, otherwise a step appears at the edge which stays visible even under a finish coat.
