In the spring of 1942 the besieged island of Malta faced a decision: either reinforcements would arrive or the defense would end. The aircraft could not be brought there by ship, and so an American aircraft carrier took them within range and the pilots took off from it knowing that landing back on the deck was impossible. They had to reach the island and land on its bombed-out strips. The first attempt turned out badly, because the machines were destroyed on the ground before they could refuel. The second was prepared differently and the defense of the island turned around within a few days.
This variant had two cannons and four machine guns in the wing, which was a fundamental change from the earlier purely machine gun armament. It also acquired a new weakness: at first the cannons froze in the cold at altitude and heating had to be developed. The version was built in enormous numbers and was adapted to everything from tropical filters to clipped wings for combat near the ground.
The frames of the canopy are narrow and masking them by hand costs nerves as well as time. The film is cut exactly, holds its shape and after it is peeled off a sharp boundary of paint is left. The inner parts complete the frame as seen into the cockpit and the insignia masks make it possible to spray concentric circles without applying anything.
