A basic masking set for a model of the Lockheed SR-71A strategic reconnaissance aircraft in 1:48 scale. The masks are cut from kabuki masking paper, which shapes well around curves and leaves no adhesive once lifted off. It is not a kit but an accessory for painting. Within this range the BASIC level denotes the smallest scope of set – for the same aircraft the manufacturer also carries more broadly conceived sets at the ADVANCED and EXPERT levels and a separate set for the markings.
The Lockheed SR-71A was a two-seat strategic reconnaissance aircraft intended for flight at high supersonic speed at great altitudes. The structure was largely of titanium alloys, because the surface heated up strongly in flight, and the aircraft was powered by two Pratt and Whitney J58 engines with variable-geometry intakes. The flowing transitions from fuselage into wing and the two canted vertical tails are characteristic. For a modeler that means large continuous areas in a dark shade, where every overspray onto the glazing is clearly visible.
Degrease the surface and let the paint harden. Lay the mask down and press the edges around the frames with a blunt point, so that no paint runs under them. Spray thin layers and rather several times over – with dark shades the edge otherwise marks itself easily. Take the paper off shortly after the paint has dried, not after several days. With this aircraft it pays to spray the interior of the cabin and the frames first and only then to mask and spray the external shade.
The package contains masks only. The model, paints and varnishes are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
