Photo-etched parts for the Su-30SM 1:48

A set of photo-etched metal parts intended for a model of the Sukhoi Su-30SM in 1:48 scale. Photo-etched metal is made by etching a shape out of thin metal sheet, and it can therefore hold a thickness a plastic part will never have. That is exactly why it is used for grilles, plates with relief, loops, catches and other small things where every tenth of a millimeter shows on a model.

The real subject

The Su-30SM belongs to the broad family derived from the Su-27. It is a large twin-engine aircraft with a crew of two sitting one behind the other, with canards ahead of the wing and with movable nozzles that give it unusual agility. The size of the aircraft translates in 1:48 scale into a large model on which small metal features stand out.

Building tips

• separate the parts, held in the sheet by thin tabs, with a sharp knife on a hard surface
• make the bends along the marked grooves, best in a bender or between two blades
• they are glued with superglue applied in a small quantity on the tip of a toothpick
• before painting, degrease the metal and use a primer, otherwise the surface rubs off
• work out the placing of the individual parts according to the instructions of the set's maker
