Cut masks for painting the area of the exhaust nozzles on the model of the Su-33 carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. It is neither a model nor a replacement part but an accessory for the painting stage of a plastic kit. Unlike the usual masking sets, which are aimed mainly at the cockpit glazing, this one is aimed, according to its name, precisely at the nozzles, that is, at one of the most difficult places on the whole model.
The Su-33 is a large twin-engine carrier airplane derived from the Su-27. The ends of the engine nacelles with their nozzles are painted differently from the rest of the airframe: while the fuselage carries a flat opaque shade, the nozzles tend to have a metallic look with heat discoloration. Two entirely different types of paint therefore meet on a circular transition which is, moreover, right on the edge of the model and is looked at by everyone who picks the model up.
A circular transition cannot be made evenly freehand, because the eye spots a deviation on a circle at once. A cut mask holds the shape, but it has to be worked down all the way round, because a circle lifts in every direction at the same time. The order matters just as much: metallic and metal shades are harder to spray over and harder to mask, their pigment settles to the bottom and they are laid onto a smooth base, so it is usually better to have the metal area as the last step. Seal the edge before spraying with a thin coat of base or clear paint, so that any seepage stays colorless. Take the mask off shortly after it is dry to the touch and peel it slowly at an angle back over itself. Metal coats are more fragile than an ordinary shade and are apt to peel away with the mask if it is torn off abruptly.
