About product

Eduard photo-etched steel seat belts 1:48 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XVI

Seat belts etched from steel for the cockpit of a model of the Spitfire Mk.XVI in 1:48 scale. On fighters the cockpit is a space that is clearly visible under a sliding canopy, and a flat plastic molding of the belts is one of the first details that gives a finished model away. Etched steel deals with that problem twice over: it is thin to scale and holds its shape once formed, so a belt can hang freely over the edge of a seat. The manufacturer is the Czech company Eduard.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XVI belonged to the late versions of this British fighter. From the otherwise very close Mk.IX version it differed above all in its engine: the Mk.XVI was powered by a Merlin built under license in the United States. A number of machines of this version had a cut-down fuselage spine and a teardrop canopy, which markedly improved the view to the rear, but machines with the older high spine were built too. For a modeler that is a substantial difference, because the two forms call for a different shape of the rear fuselage. The version was employed at the close of the war and part of the fleet served on after it.

Usage tips

Paint the seat of the Spitfire and let it dry before you fit the belts. Separate the parts with a scalpel and do the shaping dry around a blunt edge until you are happy with the look. Glue with a small drop of super glue applied with the tip of a wire. If you are building the teardrop canopy, more of the cockpit will show than on the variant with the high spine, so it pays to give the belts matching care. Finally, bring the transitions up and soil the surfaces very finely, otherwise new belts look too clean against the rest of the cockpit.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of a model of the Spitfire Mk.XVI in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to rid a cockpit of flat plastic belts
  • Those who build the version with a teardrop canopy and a better view into the cockpit
  • Beginners in working with photo-etch

It is not a kit of the aircraft. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Above all in the engine, as the Mk.XVI had a Merlin built under license in the United States. Part of the fleet had a cut-down spine and a teardrop canopy, while others stayed with the high spine.

The belts are designed for the Mk.XVI version. Compare the information on the box of the set with the kit you are building.

If the sheet is printed in color, it is not painted over. You will recognize the rendering of the belts from the box of the set.

It is not. It is a set of belts for a cockpit, and the plastic model is obtained separately.
