A set of masking templates for spraying the American insignia on models in 1:48 scale. The span of dates in the name defines the short period of 1943 when the American markings had a form different from the later one; the set is tied to precisely that. The insignia is therefore not applied as a decal but sprayed straight into the paint. That is especially useful where the markings lie across rivets, panel lines or a rounded transition, on which a decal settles badly.
Sprayed markings lie in the same layer as the surrounding paint. No silvering and no visible rim of a carrier film appear on them, you need no decal softener and there is no risk of the edge starting to lift in time. The result takes a matte varnish and later weathering well, because there is nothing underneath it that could be damaged. It also pays off on models you want to wear down by scuffing: you can scuff through a sprayed insignia to the base just as anywhere else.
The template goes on a surface ready for painting, that is before spraying and not after it. The base has to be smooth, dry and free of grease, otherwise the paint will creep under the edge. Apply several thin coats instead of one heavy one and spray at right angles to the surface, so that the paint does not get under the edge. Lift the mask off while the paint is freshly dried; once it is fully cured it may tear the edge. With a multicolor insignia you work in layers according to the manufacturer's instructions.
What is supplied are the masking templates only. The model, paints, glue and decals are not included, unless stated otherwise.
