About product

The airfield tow tractor Clarkat type B in 1:48 scale

The kit from the manufacturer Brengun handles the small airfield tow tractor of the Clarkat type in 1:48 scale, according to the name in British service. This is not a model of an aircraft but a service vehicle that moved about the aprons and hangars. The model is supplied unassembled and to finish it you will need glue and paints.

The real subject

Clarkat is the designation of a line of tiny tractors of American industrial origin, which spread at the airfields of the Allies during the war. The vehicles were deliberately low and short, so that they could squeeze between aircraft under preparation and under their wings, while still having enough weight to pull loaded trolleys or an aircraft itself. Type B is one of the smaller forms of this line. In period photographs of airfields such machines commonly stand in the background, and that is precisely why they are a rewarding addition to any diorama that wants to look inhabited.

Building and painting tips

With a tiny model it pays to work in groups: first the frame and the chassis, then the cab and finally the small equipment. Keep access to the places you will be painting and glue the wheels only after spraying. Stand the model on a flat base and check that it stands on all its wheels. Before painting, apply primer, which will even the surface out. Spray the base shade in thin layers and then bring it to life with a light lightening of the centers of the areas. Scuffed paint on the edges, a fine panel wash, greasy patches on the frame and dust or mud on the wheels will give the character of a service vehicle. Small items around the vehicle suit a diorama as well, for example a tow bar, chocks under the wheels or boxes of tools.

Who the model is for

  • Builders of airfield dioramas in 1:48 scale
  • Collectors of ground hardware and small utility vehicles
  • Modelers who want to complete the scene around an already built aircraft
  • Anyone interested in airfield equipment and how it is handled in a model

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is a small airfield tow tractor, that is, a ground service vehicle. Neither an aircraft nor trolleys are included in the package.

It comes out best in a diorama beside an aircraft in 1:48 scale, where it serves as a measure and gives the scene life. It can be built on its own as well.

Use chipping on the edges, a fine wash into the recesses and dust pigments on the wheels and the underside. Service vehicles tend to be worn, but not wrecked.
