Markings for the twin-engine Vickers Wellington IC in four forms, from coastal patrols over the Atlantic to a desert base in Egypt. Masks for the glazing are enclosed.
Responsibility details are not available.
The geodetic structure of Barnes Wallis gave the Wellington the reputation of a machine that would bring its crew home even with a shot-up fuselage. The IC version with a pair of Bristol Pegasus engines made up the backbone of British night bombing in the first two years of the war and later moved to Coastal Command and to the Mediterranean theater as well. The four variants on this sheet capture both worlds.
Two markings belong to a Polish squadron that from the fall of 1940 flew from Swinderby in England, and a further machine of the same nationality is already serving with Coastal Command in 1942. The desert face of the type is represented by an aircraft from Shallufa in Egypt of January 1941 in a sand-colored coat. For selected machines their serial numbers are given as well, so their fate can be traced in the literature.
Besides the markings the package holds masks for the glazed areas. With a twin-engine bomber that is a welcome saving of time, because the pilot's cockpit and the side windows have intricate frames and masking them with tape takes up a substantial part of the build.
The ribbed surface of the geodetic covering is the most demanding area of the whole model for a film. Without a glossy intermediate layer and without a thorough dose of softener a decal will not settle across the ribs and will silver. It pays to work in small sections, to draw the excess water off with the edge of a paper towel and always to let the area dry out properly between the individual steps.
