The set is a plastic kit, not a finished model. The 1:56 scale is typical of tabletop games and wargaming, so the model follows on in size from figures and terrain of the same size and takes up little room in a display case. The IS-2 is a Soviet heavy tank put into service from 1944. Against the older KV type it has a lower and more compact hull with a markedly sloped front, a cast turret and main armament of 122 mm caliber. A gun of this caliber fired separate-loading ammunition, so the rate of fire was lower, but the effect of the shell on the target was great. The ammunition supply was limited for that reason. Power was provided by a diesel twelve-cylinder, and the running gear used torsion bar suspension and six road wheels on each side. During production the tank went through modifications of the hull front, which simplified manufacture and improved resistance.
The parts at this scale are small, so nip them off with cutters and level the gate stubs with a file. Before building, wash the sprues with lukewarm water and detergent so that the paint holds. Paint the running gear and the bottom of the hull before the superstructure covers them. Soviet green easily looks flat in a small scale, so a somewhat lighter base shade helps, with a dark wash into the recesses and fine emphasis of the edges by dry brushing. The cast turret stands up to a slightly grainy texture, which can be suggested by a heavier coat of primer. Leave dust and mud mainly on the bottom and around the running gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
