A decal sheet in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer DK Decals, focused on machines of the 23rd Fighter Group of the US Army Air Forces. According to the name it covers the North American P-51D and P-51K fighter versions and the F-6K reconnaissance version as well. The package contains decals only, so you get the model separately. Which machines are shown on the sheet and how many there are is given on the packaging.
The Mustang was a single-seat all-metal fighter with a liquid-cooled engine and a laminar-flow wing section, which gave it exceptional range. Versions D and K differed mainly in the propeller used and in the plant that built them; both had a bubble canopy. The F-6K was the reconnaissance form of version K with cameras in the rear fuselage but with the armament retained, so outwardly it differs from the fighter only in small details, above all the camera windows in the sides of the fuselage. The 23rd Fighter Group operated in the China theater, where it took over the tasks of the earlier volunteer group.
In 1:72 scale the biggest challenge is the tiny lettering and the small numbers, so work with smooth-tipped tweezers and a dampened brush that will carry the decal without damaging it. The surface must be glossy, otherwise the small film traps air and starts to silver. The round fuselage of the Mustang is awkward for large bands: apply decal softener in two doses and do not touch the decal at all in between, otherwise it will tear. Then polish the dried surface gently with a damp cloth to remove any adhesive residue and seal it with a matte clear coat, which leaves the decal flush with the surface.
Decals are an accessory for a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
