About product

3t German Cargo Truck (m.1939) G917T 1:72, an ACE kit

A kit of the G917T cargo truck in 1:72 scale from the ACE brand. The m.1939 designation refers to the production form of 1939. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as an ordinary injection-molded plastic kit. ACE is among the makers that release short-run kits of less usual subjects: the parts tend to be thinner and finer, but they call for more work with cleaning up and dry-fitting than the molds of the large Japanese makers.

The real subject

The G917T was a three-ton cargo truck built in Germany at the Ford works in Cologne. It arose as a civilian commercial vehicle and in the prewar as well as the wartime period it reached army service in large numbers, where it carried out ordinary supply and transport tasks. In design terms it was a simple rear-wheel-drive vehicle with the cab over the front axle and a flatbed body with drop sides and a tarpaulin. The type was built in various forms for several years and differed mainly in the design of the cab; which variant this particular model covers is not stated here.

Building and painting tips

With short-run molds expect the parts to have no locating pins: dry-fit every subassembly first and glue step by step, not all at once. Cut the surplus plastic from the gates away with a sharp knife and level the surface with a file. Finish and paint the chassis, the axles and the frame before you fit the body, because later you will not reach them. On a cargo truck it pays to spend time on the load area and the tarpaulin, as it is they that set the final impression. For weathering use a dark wash into the seams and dry pigment for mud and dust effects around the wheels and the wheel arches; on a vehicle the effect of in-service dirt matters more than on an aircraft.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers focused on wheeled military vehicles in 1:72 scale
  • Builders of dioramas who need a supply vehicle for a scene
  • Anyone interested in less usual subjects outside the mainstream
  • Modelers with experience of short-run molds

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

We recommend checking the number of parts against the manufacturer's data before buying.

Rather not. Short-run molds call for more cleaning up of the parts and more dry-fitting than ordinary mass-production kits.

We recommend checking the contents of the package before buying.

The type was built in several forms, so we recommend checking the variant against the artwork on the box.
