The Mk.61 is a French 105 mm self-propelled howitzer of the 1950s, built on the proven light tracked chassis of the AMX series. The weapon is not in a rotating turret but in a fixed superstructure open at the top, which simplified and lightened the vehicle markedly but at the same time offered the crew only limited protection. The chassis kept the characteristic features of its family: torsion bar suspension, the drive sprocket at the front and a fairly short, low hull. Thanks to its low weight the vehicle was easy to transport and it stayed in service for a good many years; besides France it was used by other armies as well. What is interesting for the modeler is precisely the combination of an angular open superstructure with a small tracked chassis, which gives the vehicle a recognizable silhouette different from the large self-propelled howitzers of later generations.
Clear the parts of flash first and level the mating surfaces. Finish and paint the running gear and the inside of the superstructure before you close the whole up; you will not reach them later. Fit the tracks only once the chassis is painted. It pays to concentrate on the open superstructure, because it can be seen into and acts as a showcase for the interior detail. Choose the base shade according to the user of the vehicle; use a dark wash into the recesses to pick out the shapes and fine dust shades on the lower part of the hull and on the running gear.
