Decals 1:72 for two Fortresses of the same group: the earlier version F and the newer G with kill markings on the nose.
Responsibility details are not available.
Between versions F and G there is one difference at first glance, but an unmissable one: the twin-barrel chin turret under the nose, which only the later variant received. It was precisely the head-on attacks by German fighters that forced the designers to add defense forward. The sheet sets both guises of the Fortress side by side, which makes it a rewarding reference for a pair of models showing the development of the type.
The first is a Fortress of version F with the serial number 42-29815 and the fuselage code LG-P, whose name referred to a Florida port. The second is version G, serial number 42-31636, code OR-N and a name the crew borrowed from common talk about a mouse in an outhouse. With the second machine goes a set of markings announcing opponents shot down, which on a bomber meant the success of the defensive fire rather than the credit of one pilot. Both letter combinations belonged to squadrons of one and the same bomb group.
Kill markings are tiny and easily shift. It has proved best to lay them into a layer of gloss clear, align them with a damp brush and let them dry out thoroughly, and only then to apply a matte overcoat. If you are building both machines, take care to assign the codes correctly: the letters belong to two different squadrons and swapping them would make the model a machine that never flew.
