Two Superfortresses separated by five years and one war. The aircraft 42-65306 captured on Okinawa in 1951 and the machine 44-87660 from 1945, which served within the 28th Bombardment Squadron. The sheet in 1:72 scale carries their numbers, codes and nose names.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Superfortress is a rare case of a bomber that made it through the close of one world war and the whole course of another war. This sheet shows that double life on a pair of particular machines. The younger of the subjects, the aircraft 42-65306, was photographed in 1951 on Okinawa, from where American bomber crews flew over the Korean peninsula. It carried a name referring to an outlaw and belonged to the 28th Squadron within the 19th Group.
The older subject, the machine 44-87660 with the name of a celestial queen, is dated 1945 and came under the 58th Wing, that is the formation that led strategic raids from the Pacific islands. From one sheet a modeler therefore gets a picture of change: during the war these machines relied on high altitude bombing by day, and five years later their role already looked different.
The printing is deep and holds on a bare duralumin shade with no change of tone. A kit has to be your own; the sheet is a separate accessory to any Superfortress model in this scale. Anyone who builds both subjects side by side gets a vivid illustration of how the markings of American bombers changed over five years, and with them the whole view of the role of a heavy machine.
