The aircraft of a carrier air group commander could be told at a glance: it carried its own number ending in zeros and often more colorful markings than the rest of the squadron. The sheet gathers five such machines from the time when American naval aviation flew in an overall blue finish and the piston-engine attack aircraft was its workhorse.
All five aircraft were flown by commanding officers, so more careful maintenance and more prominent markings can be expected on them. At the same time they come from four different ships and five different groups, which makes the sheet a decent survey of the first postwar years of carrier aviation. The overall blue finish moreover makes building simpler: masking transitions falls away and the main work shifts to shading the panels and to wear.
A dark blue surface is demanding on contrast, so a gloss varnish applied in two thin coats belongs under the decals. White lettering on a dark background shows through if air gets under it, so it is best settled onto a damp surface and pressed down with a soft swab. The model, paints and varnishes are not included in the package.
