The sheet concentrates on a pair of machines of the B-17G version. The first is serial number 43-37516 with the code JJ-T, the second 42-31333 with the code LG-W, whose name is among the most quoted nicknames of the whole bomber offensive. The photograph of its last flight over Germany in April 1945 went around the world and still appears in selections of the strongest wartime images.
The G version was the most numerous form of the type. Its recognition feature is the chin turret under the glazed nose, which the designers added after it turned out that German fighters attacked preferentially from the front. Later series also received modified waist gun positions and a lighter dorsal turret, so machines of one unit could differ slightly from one another.
The pair of letters before the hyphen denotes the squadron, the letter after it the particular aircraft. Anyone who takes the trouble with a photograph of the period will trace even small things such as repaired panels or faded areas around the exhausts, which turn a model into the portrait of one machine.
The serial numbers on the rudder are small and thin, so let them soak for a shorter time and transfer them in one piece. If the film ripples, put a drop of water back on it and wait until it straightens by itself; pulling at it with tweezers does not pay off. Once dry, check against the light whether a bubble has stayed under the printing.
