About product

BT-2 with the experimental turret 1:72 — a UM kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet BT-2 fast tank in the form with the experimental turret designated after the Leningrad works Krasny Putilovets, in 1:72 scale from the brand UM. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The small scale and the prototype turret make it an item rather for collectors of the development branches of Soviet interwar equipment than for a quick build.

The real subject

The BT-2 was the first production vehicle of the Soviet line of fast tanks, which came from the chassis of the designer Christie bought at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s. The line was characterized by the ability to run on tracks and, once the tracks were removed, directly on its rubber-tired road wheels, by long suspension travel and by a high speed on a hard surface for its day. The armament and the turret went through a series of experimental solutions on the early BTs, because the production supply of guns could not keep up with the rate at which hulls were built. One of those prototype turrets is the subject of this set.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale the parts are small and fragile — cut them off with a sharp cutter close to the part and clean them up with a fine-grained file, not with pliers. Assemble the running gear on a flat surface and let it cure before you fit the tracks, otherwise the model stands crooked. Paint the interior, if it is included, before closing up the hull. In a small scale a primer decides how a wash behaves: without one the wash runs into places you do not want. After the paint, apply a gloss varnish under the decals, then a dark wash into the engraved lines and finally a matte varnish. Deal with dust and mud on the running surface sparingly with pigments — in 1:72 very little is enough.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Soviet interwar equipment and development prototypes
  • Modelers building in 1:72 scale, where the whole BT line is collected
  • More experienced builders — the small parts call for a steady hand
  • A diorama or a display case where the model completes the ordinary production forms

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Rather not. In 1:72 scale the parts of the running gear are very small and the build calls for a sharp tool, a steady hand and patience.

Sparingly. In a small scale a dark wash into the engraved lines, a fine highlighting of the edges and a minimum of pigment on the running surface are enough, otherwise the effect looks exaggerated.
