Laser cut burdock leaves for a 1:72 diorama. The plant is assembled from flat parts and painted to suit the season.
Responsibility details are not available.
Burdock grows exactly where most wartime scenes take place: on road shoulders, by ruins, around ditches and in untended yards. Its large heart shaped leaves and the burs on stiff stems are impossible to miss in nature, and that is why a few clumps are enough to make a scene look abandoned and overgrown. At 1:72 a mature plant measures only a few millimeters, so it can be placed even between the wheels of a vehicle or at the foot of a wall, where ordinary loose growth would look like a lump.
Separate the individual leaves with a sharp scalpel right on the cutting mat, because at this size a small part easily flies off when snapped out. Before gluing, ripple the leaves with the blunt side of the tweezers or draw them over the edge of a table, so that they lose their paper flatness. Fit them onto a thin wire or a bristle that will form the stem, and work from the bottom up so that the lower leaves overlap.
It is better to paint after assembly, with thinned acrylic applied in several light coats. Burdock does not have a uniform green: the middle of the leaf tends to be darker, the edges dry toward yellow and rust by the end of summer. That very transition is what makes the plant look alive. Finally fix the clump to the base with a drop of thinned white glue, so that the leaves do not spring.
