About product

Metal 150 mm StuH 43 barrel for the Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär — the early version, 1:72, Aber

A turned metal barrel in 1:72 scale from the Polish maker Aber. It is not a kit of a vehicle but a detail accessory for a model of the German Sturmpanzer IV assault vehicle, nicknamed the Brummbär. The metal barrel will replace the plastic part and bring what a casting cannot manage in this scale — a perfectly circular cross section, sharp transitions of diameter and a genuinely drilled muzzle.

The real subject

The Brummbär came about in 1943 by building the heavy StuH 43 assault howitzer of 150 mm caliber into a tall armored casemate on the chassis of the Panzer IV. Its task was direct fire support for infantry in city fighting, where a heavy high-explosive shell broke up fortified buildings. The short barrel of a large caliber is the most noticeable mark of the vehicle. The early examples differ from the later ones in the form of the barrel and of the front of the casemate — which is why the maker offers two separate sets.

Building and painting tips

Cut the plastic barrel off at the mantlet and clean the hole out with a drill of the matching diameter. Glue the metal part with cyanoacrylate glue; on a short, heavy barrel epoxy works well too. A short barrel of a large caliber forgives little — check that it sits level and on the axis of the vehicle. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a base coat for metals. Darken the inside of the muzzle and add a dusting, otherwise the drilled opening looks too clean.

Who the barrel is for

  • Builders of German assault vehicles in 1:72 scale
  • Anyone interested in the early production batch of the Sturmpanzer IV
  • Modelers who want a perfectly circular barrel with a drilled muzzle
  • Builders of competition and display models

This is a detail accessory, not a complete model. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a metal barrel on its own that replaces the plastic part in a model you already own.

The early and the later examples differ in the form of the barrel and of the front of the casemate. The maker therefore offers two separate sets — choose according to the variant you are building.

A large caliber means a large diameter, where every parting line and the slightest ovality shows. A turned part has a perfectly circular cross section.

Darken the inside and add a dusting with pigment. A cleanly shiny opening looks unnatural.
